Hedge Fund Awards

June 20, 2011 James Heinsman Hedge Fund News

Financial News Awards for Excellence in Institutional Hedge Fund Management Europe 2011 At last week’s financial news awards that took place at London’s One Mayfair, MD of Paulson, Mina Gerowin, delivered the keynote speech. Gerowin certainly has an interesting background. Starting her career as a lawyer, she then worked in international M&A at Lazard Frères, after which she then bought and headed five companies as LBOs. She was about to go into retirement but met up with John Paulson by chance seven years ago who she had known from her time at Harvard Business School. As noted in an article in the Financial News, she joined Paulson & Co., moved to London and today heads the company’s “European event, distressed and credit investment team.”

Hedge Fund Challenges

The hedge fund industry has definitely encountered some challenges over the last few years. In 2008 it was the global financial crisis; the year later a “widespread rally” and in 2010, the issue of “complex markets going sideways.” They have also been the recipient of pressure to become “more transparent.” Thus, for the last year, according to the editor of Financial News, William Wright, showing signs of “excellence” has certainly not been easy. Indeed it’s more a case of staying above board. What with tighter regulations from Brussels and Washington, it’s not exactly been a piece of cake for the industry or its executives.

Hedge Funds Hammering Odds

Nonetheless, hedge funds have still been coming up trumps and this event recognized all of that. The “FN 40 Under 40 Rising Stars of the Hedge Fund Industry, Financial News’ editorial pick of the brightest up-and-coming men and women in the industry” also took place at the event. An impressive number of start-up managers were among the rising stars, indicative of a “bouncing back” of the launch environment.

Whopping Winners

So who were the big winners at the event? Which managers went home with a smile on their faces? BlueCrest Capital Management president and head of systematic trading Leda Braga certainly had something to brag about, earning the “Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution (Editorial Choice) – as well as awards for Best Hedge Fund Manager in Managed Futures and Most Influential Woman in the European Hedge Fund Industry.” As well, Best Hedge Fund Manager in Global Macro went to Brevan Howard Asset Management and Alan Howard got Hedge Fund Chief Executive of the Year (founder of Brevan).
