Hedge Fund Managers Top Global Stock Picks for 2012

February 19, 2012 James Heinsman Tops

One logical investment strategy is to go like the pros; find out what the top investors are investing in, and ride along with them. As investors headquartered in the United States are learning more each year, some of the best opportunities for growth lie outside the US borders. Although last year was not such a great year for global stocks, including China, it seems today’s best money managers are sticking with an international strategy to beat the odds.

Take a look at what the experts are investing in:

•    Seth Klarman of Baupost Group: Top holing is BP, the giant oil company, with a market cap of $134 billion. Klarman added to his portfolio in Q3 of 2011 Syneron Medical, a small Israel-based company with a market cap of $360 million.

•    Stephen Mandel of Lone Pine Capital:  CTrip.com and NetEase.com are particular favorites of Mandel’s.

•    Bill Ackman of Pershing Square Capital: Ackman is going with Canadian Pacific Railway, a new position for him.

•    Lee Ainslie of Maverick Capital opened a new position with Ambev-Companhia de Bebidas Americanas.

•    David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital added 9.54% to his investment in Ensco.
