Hedge fund executives teamed up with New York’s recent same-sex marriage campaign, resulting in the new bill that was passed in the New York State Senate earlier this week.

According to a report in the New York Time, several state Senate Republicans were urged to make same-sex marriage legal in the state by hedge fund tycoons Steven Cohen, Paul Singer, Dan Loeb and Clifford Asness. The bill will come into effect on July 24th.

Singer, who leads Elliot Management, has a gay son. He met with Asness of AQR Capital, Third Point’s Loeb and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to discuss the legislation and the republicans who would need to be convinced. More than $1 million were donated to the campaign.

Asness confirmed to Hedgefund.net that he supported the bill, but did not comment further.
